Wall vs. Couch

Get That Couch Off the Wall!

Most people start off with very good intentions. They want to make their living room more open; they want more space – because who on earth doesn’t crave more space, right? And what is the first thing they do? They push the couch against the wall! And they call it a win.

But what most people don’t realize is that once you put the couch up against the wall, the room becomes off centered and the opposite happens. The room loses depth and the open feel goes away because the eye is so focused on the sofa flushed against the wall.  It just doesn’t work.

I must confess the couch against the wall thing is a pet peeve of mine and I see it all too often. A sofa has the potential of adding character and bringing a room together, so the last thing you want to do is isolate it and put it against a wall. You’re probably thinking, my room is small, there is no other place for that large piece of furniture, how bad can it be? But just humor me for a minute and think about it… If a couch belonged against a wall, why would it have such nice fabric on the back? Wouldn’t it be a waste, if the intent of the designer were to hide the couch?

A nice sofa is an important part of the décor and décor belongs on display. So, let your sofa be the centerpiece of your living room. Give it a chance and it will bring your whole room together. Hear me out when I say that sofas anchor the room; they should never be the wallflower off in the corner.

Now, if you have your couch against the wall, just move it away from it. Even a handful of inches will make a huge difference.

Go ahead, try it out and let me know your thoughts. I’d love to hear from you and I promise you won’t be disappointed.
